My dissertation research on allergies in the United States consists of two parts. One examines how clinical research is driving the current revolution in treatments for allergy. The other investigates how support groups and advocacy organizations help to connect patients and communicate information about treatments to patient communities.

My research engages with social science literatures on the politics of clinical research, the construction and management of allergy risk through the strategic use of technological objects, and the way that food allergy care is linked to regulatory systems and gendered expectations of practices of care.

I conducted ethnographic research with physicians, scientists, and patient support groups for 15 months to learn more about these issues. My research methods include open-ended and scripted interviews, participant observation, online ethnography, and medical document analysis.

  • Master of Arts degree received upon admission to candidacy for the PhD. Teaching fields for my qualifying exams included social studies of medicine, social studies of risk, and environmental history.

  • As a student in the College of Arts and Sciences, I received a broad liberal arts experience, rigorous scientific training in pursuit of a major in Biological Sciences, and a minor in French Studies.

Also a forum for communication with in initiative to highlight marginalized voices and stories PIP poses the question:

How can virtual experiences help us connect with and better understand each other across lines of race, gender identity, class, geography, bodily and cognitive ability, and more? What new forms of storytelling, subjectivity, and standpoints will they enable us to inhabit?
