Rate this book
Kindness is a gift everyone can afford.

Kindness Rocks is a touching children’s picture book about the power of kindness and how small things can inspire, motivate and uplift others in tremendous ways.

Little Clara enjoys scribbling cute messages on rocks and leaving them for people to read. One day a turtle comes by feeling down and out. Upon seeing the messages on the rocks he is rejuvenated and rushes home to share the messages with his friends.

This is not your typical rock, mineral or stone picture book, but rather a heartwarming tale that seeks to teach children that no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.

Kindness Rocks encourages positive behavior, cognitive thinking, a growth mindset, and the power of kindness and positivity. Kindness Rocks by Sonica Ellis is a sweet, little, children's read!

The cover alone is absolutely gorgeous (but I love gardens and the green outdoors, so maybe I'm biased). Inside the book, the gorgeous green environment continues and packs quite the punch. The style stood out to me, since lately I've been seeing a lot of cartoon-y or 3D children's books.

The story centers around Clara, a girl who is a rock collector. Our little friends puts random acts of kindness on said rocks and puts them outside for people to find them. A little turtle finds them and it brightens up his day (Sheldon the turtle... oh man, I love puns). Sheldon brings all of his friends, and his friends' friends to see the rocks and in turn makes everybody super happy. But there's an epic plot twist near the end! A beautiful, beautiful plot twist...

I thought this book was adorable and has a wonderful message. Being kind to people is an important message that seems lost quite often in today's world.

I would recommend this book to age groups 3 through 6 years old. I think it'd be a great, little addition to your young one's library. Or for reading buddies looking for something short and sweet!

Four out of five stars!

Kindness rocks and so does this book

I was never much of a rock collector growing up but several of the little people in my love collecting rocks. This books presents a cool idea of what to do with the rocks. Love the positive messages and the reminder that kindness is never wasted.

Little Clara collects rocks alo9ng the creek beds & then loves to paint special messages on them. Then she leaves them for people to find & read.
1-day Sheldon (turtle) is feeling sad & spies 1 of Clara's rocks with a message on it.
It perked him up so much Sheldon went & told his best friends Benny (bunny); Merle (squirrel); Nibbles (mouse); & Harry (skunk) what he had found.
All the other animals soon found out also & shared with their friends.
Little Clara knew it was hard work, but she continued to do what she knew was best for all.
It came time & the family had to move another baby was on the way.

Sheldon soon realized that Clara had moved.

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

An awesome book cover, great hand-drawn colored pictures, charming illustrations & proper font & writing style. A very professionally written children’s (preschool/elementary age) zoo animal storybook. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters, settings, etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great children’s educational presentation, (kindness/encouragement), movie, an animated cartoon, or better yet a mini-TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

In this picture book, a young girl named Clara collects rocks, paints kind messages on them, and leaves them outside for others to see. The other characters in the book are all anthropomorphic animals, including Sheldon the Turtle, Benny Bunny, and Merle the Squirrel. The impact it made on the animals shows the reader how kindness changes the way people feel and act. The animals came together and brought more of their animal friends to witness these kind rocks, demonstrating the unity that results from kindness. Kindness Rocks represents the kindness and empathy theme I have chosen because in the book, the characters show awareness of each other’s feelings. When the kind rocks are no longer there, one of the main characters observes how the rocks’ absence makes him feel and comes up with a solution to recreate the feeling these kind rocks brought to him and his friends. This character has seen the positive feelings these rocks have brought to him and his friends, and knows that without these rocks, his friends will feel sad. The use of anthropomorphic animals in a children’s book like this one is a topic discussed in the article “Decoding the images: How picture books work” by Perry Nodelman. Nodelman points out the use of human characters as the authority figures in the story, and the use of animals, if any, as the secondary characters. “Kindness Rocks” uses a single human character as the main character, giving her authority or more power in the book than the secondary, animal characters have. If the species of the characters were switched, the social hierarchy of the characters in the book would be difficult to understand by a young child.

Kindness Rocks is a Children's Book written by the author Sonica Ellis and Illustrated by Fx and Color Studio. This book teaches little kids about the importance of kindness. The main character of the story is a little girl Clara. She loves to collect and decorate rocks by painting words of kindness on the rocks. She put all those rocks in front of her house so other people can also read those messages.

One day, Sheldon The Turtle was feeling low. He saw decorated rocks in front of Clara's house. He told about those decorated rocks to other animals to uplift them as well. Small act of Clara has motivated so many animals.

Kind people are the best people. I really agree with this. This book gives wonderful message to be kind to others. It's good to teach children to be kind since their childhood. Well written, nicely narrated story with colorful illustrations. I strongly recommend this book for little kids.

I just love this book. Kindness does indeed rock!

Clara is a girl who is inherently sweet. She collects rocks, then paints kind messages on them for any and all who pass to see. She shares love without a second thought.

When Sheldon the turtle passes, in a glum mood, Clara's rocks immediately cheer him up. Exactly what they're meant to do. He in turn shares with another animal friend, and that creates a chain reaction. Soon many animals are enjoying Clara's wonderful kindness rocks. There is obviously more to this story and more kindness to share, but I'll let you read it from Sonica herself.

Between Clara's unyielding compassion and Sheldon's continuation of caring, this book just exudes kindness from every page. If only everyone could be like these characters...

But first, be kind.

Sonnie's book is about spreading kindness. There is no expectation of return. In sweet, simple prose, readers will learn of how one little girl brings happiness to others. And her actions inspire others to do the same.

The lovely illustrations invite us in and the message challenges us to spread kindness in our own communities.

Kindness Rocks is a beautiful story about a young girl who writes some kind and encouraging phrases on some rocks and leaves them outside her home for everyone to see.

This is a really lovely idea for a book and it shows so well how much of a difference kind words can make. I think it is great that we get to see how the animals react to the rocks and that the little girl takes the time to make them each day even though she doesn't see their reactions. Perfect for getting children to think about how they can be kind and what kind things others do to make them happy.

The illustrations are lovely and it is nice to see the rocks as a focus as it helps us see and understand the effects they are having. Having animals as characters is fun and I think this is preferable to people for children as it is shown in a fun and lighthearted way but still relatable.

This is a fantastic book to show how kindness can improve your day and spread and it is even something children could start doing themselves, a great read!

As a child I had pet rocks and as a early childhood educator I paint rock gardens for my students. When I saw this book, I was thrilled that not only was there a book about painting rocks and kindness but that the main character was Black. Unfortunately, Sheldon the turtle and his other animal friends actually get centered in the story more than Clara. Besides the fact that a little girl named Clara painted rocks and now moved to a bigger house because she is going to be a big sister, we don't get to hear anything about Clara! I want to know how she came up with the idea and more about her process. I want to know how she feels about moving and being a big sister. I want stories with little Black girls on the cover to actually be about them instead of anthropomorphized woodland creatures.
