DataKind Call for DataCorps Volunteers:                        Apply by October 30
DataKind is looking for U.S. West Coast volunteer data scientists, coders, developers and project managers to work with us on new exciting DataCorps projects!

If you're interested in being considered as a volunteer for a project team, review the descriptions below and apply by midnight ET October 30th. For questions, please refer to the specific contact for each project listed.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

DataCorps projects bring together teams of pro bono data science volunteers to help organizations advance their missions. These projects will start in November and last roughly six to eight months. You can expect to commit up to 10 hours a week of your time. The first step is to complete the form. If selected, you’ll be taken through our orientation process.

HOW WE SELECT VOLUNTEERS

Take time with your responses so we can get a good understanding of your background and see which team might need your skills. We typically look for significant experience in at least one of the required skills listed for a given project so be sure to speak to those in your answers. We also do our best to form teams located in the same timezone to make scheduling calls easier. For this project, we're giving preference to volunteers located on the West Coast in the U.S.

We aim to build diverse teams and encourage all qualified people to apply - especially women, people of color, LGBTQ, and those who identify in underrepresented groups in the tech sector. Feel free to spread the word about this opportunity to your local community.

While we would love to work with everyone who applies, teams typically range from four to six people. If you are not selected for a specific project, please don’t be discouraged! We do keep all submissions on file for future projects and events.

A Classification Model to Help College Students in Wisconsin Graduate
StriveTogether is a nationally-focused, collective impact organization with a goal of ensuring that children grow to reach their full potential. Higher Expectations of Racine County is a member organization of StriveTogether with a focus on southeastern Wisconsin. StriveTogether and Higher Expectations believe that by bringing together various stakeholders and organizing efforts, they can improve outcomes for students whom the education system fails. Nationwide, U.S. students lag far behind most of their foreign peers and only about one in two college students earns a diploma.

Working with Higher Expectations and StriveTogether, both University of Wisconsin - Parkside (UWP) and Gateway Technical College (GTC) have been collecting student information (student employment status, financial data, program enrollment) and data on their performance (course records, standardized tests, etc) for many years. Both institutions have formed untested hypotheses on what it takes for students to succeed and would like to validate or disprove their hypotheses on which students don’t complete degree programs.

A DataCorps team will work with UWP and GTC to create classification models with student records data so faculty and administrators can identify students at risk of non-completion of their degrees so they can intervene to improve retention and graduation rates. The team will focus on each of the schools' datasets and determine, in tandem, which factors are the greatest predictors of non-completion and therefore which students are in need of extra attention.
